Introduction to Spam Filtering

Spam filtering allows you to prevent unsolicited email (spam) from reaching your mailbox.

By enabling spam filtering for your account, every email you receive is carefully evaluated in a variety of ways. If the email possesses a preponderance of "spam-like" characteristics, the email is categorized as spam.

One of three things can be done with email flagged as Spam: "Tag and Deliver", "Delete" and "Quarantine". For more information on these and more advanced features, see spam delivery options.

By disabling spam filtering for your account, all email will bypass the spam filter and be delivered directly to your mailbox.

Sensitivity Levels

To check or change your spam filtering sensitivity:

1. From the main menu, click "control my junk email."
2. If your spam filter is off, click "I want to turn ON my spam filter."
3. Under "I want to set the filtering sensitivity level', the current sensitivity level will be indicated. Click "set filtering sensitivity level." All available levels will be displayed.
4. Click the radio button beside the desired sensitivity level, and click "Ok".

An explanation of sensitivity levels is as follows:

Light: Use this level if you are concerned about legitimate email being inadvertently classified as spam. Be aware that while using this setting, it is relatively easy for some types of spam to get past the filter undetected.

Standard: This is the default sensitivity level. The majority of spam will be detected at this level.

Aggressive: Use this level if you receive large volumes of spam, and want to minimize the risk of any spam getting through undetected. Note that this setting has a higher chance of accidentally categorizing legitimate email as spam.

Spam Delivery Options

To check or change your spam delivery:

1. From the main menu, click "control my junk email."
2. If your spam filter is off, click "I want to turn ON my spam filter."
3. Under "I want to change what the spam filter does with junk email", the current delivery method is indicated. Click "change what the spam filter does with junk email." All available delivery options will be displayed.
4. Click the radio button located beside the desired delivery option, and click "Ok".

An explanation of delivery options is as follows:

Delete Spam: This setting automatically deletes all email which is categorized as spam by the filter. Please note that email deleted in this fashion is unrecoverable; legitimate email which was inadvertently classified as spam will be permanently lost.

Tag and deliver spam (recommended): This is the default setting for the spam filter. All email which is classified as spam by the filter will have **SPAM** added to the beginning of the subject line. You can create a rule on your email client which can move email marked in this way to a different folder, effectively sorting it out of your legitimate email.

Quarantine spam: This setting puts aside all email classified as spam, and places it in a "quarantine folder" on the mail server. The contents of the quarantine folder are not delivered to your inbox along with your regular email. If you want to view your quarantined email, see the instructions below.

To check your quarantine folder:

1. From the main menu, click "control my junk email."
2. Click "change what the spam filter does with junk email."
3. Click on "Show quarantined email" under the "Quarantine spam" option. A list of quarantined email will be displayed.
4. Choose one of the following actions:

  • Select All: This action will select all email in the quarantined folder. You can select or deselect a specific email by clicking on the checkboxes located beside each email.
  • Recover Selected: This action will deliver all selected email normally and the "from" email addresses on the recovered email will be "whitelisted." This means that other email coming from these address will bypass the spam filter in the future. For more information, see Blacklisting and Whitelisting.
  • Delete Selected: This action will permanently delete all email you have selected in the quarantine folder.

Blacklisting and Whitelisting

If you consistently get unwanted email from certain email adresses, you can put these addresses in your "blacklist". This is a list of email addresses which will always be considered a source of spam. All email sent from these addresses will automatically be captured by the filter and not delivered to your inbox.

Alternatively, if there are email addresses you don't want blocked by the spam filter, you can put these addresses in your "whitelist." This is a list of email addresses which will always be considered a source of legitimate email. All email sent from these addresses will be delivered to your inbox normally.

To check your blacklist and whitelist:

1. From the main menu, click "control my junk email."
2. If your spam filter is off, click "I want to turn ON my spam filter."
3. Under "I want to set special rules for specific email addresses" and indication will show if you currently have any entries in your whitelist or blacklist. To view these lists in greater detail, click "set special rules for specific email addresses." The contents of your whitelist and blacklist will be displayed.

To make changes to your blacklist or whitelist:

Add an entry: Type the email address you want to blacklist or whitelist in the appropriate text box and click "Add." It is possible to block an entire range of email addresses by using the asterisk (*) symbol (i.e. *@spammers.com will block all email addresses that end with "@spammers.com"). You can only use an asterisk before the "at" symbol (@).

Remove an entry: Check the box beside the email address you want to remove from your whitelist or blacklist, and click "remove selected." If you want to clear out the entire list, click "select all," then "remove selected."

Blocked Languages

To check or change your spam filter language options, follow these steps:

1. From the main menu, click "control my junk email."
2. If your spam filter is off, click "I want to turn ON my spam filter."
3. Under "I want to block email sent in certain languages," the current language blocking status is listed. Click "block email sent in certain languages." All blockable languages will be displayed.

4. If you want to change which languages are blocked, check or uncheck each language as desired, and click "OK" to save your changes. If you do not want to save your changes, click "Cancel."
